Helena's Pottery, a small shop on Main Street known for its hand-thrown stoneware and colorful glazes, brought national attention to Wanakawa this summer by winning a prestigious craft award. In July, the American Artisans Guild recognized owner Helena Meyer with its National Excellence in Pottery Award, an honor given to only a handful of studios across the country each year.

Meyer, who has operated the shop since 1976, said she was surprised when she learned the news. "I never expected something like this," she told the Gazette. "I just focus on making pieces that people will enjoy using in their homes." Her work, which includes both functional dishes and decorative vases, has been praised for its distinctive style and durability.

The award has already boosted business for Helena's Pottery. Meyer said she has received orders from out of state and is preparing to expand her workshop to meet demand. Locals have expressed pride in her achievement, noting that it shines a positive spotlight on Wanakawa's growing arts community.
