The Wanakawa School Board voted Monday night to approve a new curriculum for the high school that will go into effect this fall. The plan, which has been under discussion for more than a year, expands course offerings in mathematics, science, and English while also adding electives in the arts and vocational training. Board members said the changes are intended to better prepare students for college and the workforce as the town continues to grow.

Superintendent Harold Price told the Gazette that the new curriculum will "give students a stronger foundation and more choices." Among the additions are computer literacy classes, advanced placement options in U.S. history and biology, and new vocational courses in automotive technology and home economics. Price said the curriculum reflects suggestions gathered from parents, teachers, and community members during several public meetings earlier this year.

Some residents voiced concern about the cost of textbooks and equipment required for the expanded programs. Board officials assured the public that funding will be covered through a combination of district reserves and state education aid. The updated curriculum will be introduced at Wanakawa High School at the start of the 1996-1997 school year, with parent information nights scheduled later this spring.
